Deck Railing & Vinyl Decking FAQ

Vinyl Decking Frequently Asked Questions

The following vinyl decking FAQs address the types of concerns deck and railing customers usually have before choosing Okanagan Sundeck Centre as their decking and railing company.

How long is the warranty on vinyl decking and aluminum railings?

At Sundeck Centre, warranties vary depending on the product:

Okanagan Sundeck Centre also provides a 5-year workmanship warranty on all our deck installations across BC. For full warranty details, visit our product section or ask our team for specifics.

What’s the best way to remove snow and ice from vinyl decking in winter?

To protect your vinyl deck, use a plastic shovel with smooth edges. Avoid sharp metal tools that could tear the waterproof membrane. A plastic snow shovel or even a push broom works well for light snowfall.

Does vinyl decking require re-coating or sealing?

No. Tufdek® and Econodek® vinyl decking membranes are factory-finished and don’t require sealing, painting, or re-coating. The surface is waterproof and virtually maintenance-free when you follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines. Routine cleaning with mild soap and water keeps your deck looking fresh year-round.

How long will vinyl decking last in BC’s climate?

Durability depends on UV exposure, traffic levels, and how well you follow the care instructions. With proper vinyl decking maintenance, your deck can last decades, even with BC’s rain and seasonal weather changes.

How do I deal with tough stains on vinyl decking?

Most stains wipe off with mild soap and water. For stubborn spots, like grease or organic stains, contact our team. We’ll provide safe cleaning methods that won’t damage your vinyl membrane.

Why do you install 1x2 or 2x2 strips around the edge of a deck?

These strips help prevent water from running down the fascia and causing rot. They also provide solid support for the flashing, which keeps your deck watertight and extends the life of the structure.

Glass & Aluminum Railing FAQs

These glass and aluminum railing FAQs are crafted to address real customer concerns about buying and installing deck railings.

Why choose aluminum railings instead of wood, steel, or iron railings?

Wood railings rot, warp, and require frequent staining or painting. Steel and iron railings rust and need constant upkeep. Aluminum railings resist corrosion, never need painting, and hold their color thanks to durable powder coating. They combine a modern, high-end look with low maintenance, making them ideal for decks, balconies, and patios in BC’s wet climate.

Can you build custom aluminum railings for my deck or patio?

Yes. We design and install custom aluminum railing systems to fit unique spaces, whether you have angled layouts, stairs, or a pool area. Choose from different railing styles, colors, and finishing details to perfectly match your home’s exterior.

Where can aluminum railings be installed?

We can install aluminum railing systems on wood decks, composite decking, concrete patios, and waterproof vinyl decks. Some projects require specialized hardware, which we’ll recommend during the design consultation.

How do railing posts get attached to my deck?

We use two secure methods:

  • Top-mounted posts that bolt through the deck surface.
  • Fascia-mounted posts that attach to the side of the deck frame.
We’ll recommend the best option based on your deck design and BC building code requirements.

What is powder coating on aluminum railings?

Powder coating is a heat-cured protective finish applied to aluminum. Unlike paint, it won’t peel or flake, and it provides long-term resistance against fading, scratching, and corrosion. This finish is why powder-coated aluminum railings stay attractive with almost no maintenance.

What type of glass do you use in deck railing systems?

We use tempered safety glass that meets Canadian building codes:

  • 5 mm (3/16″) glass in framed railing designs.
  • 10 mm (3/8″) or 12 mm (1/2″) glass in topless and infinity railing systems.

Tempered glass is strong, impact-resistant, and ideal for glass deck railings that combine safety with unobstructed views.

Do you install Plexiglass or Lexan railings?

No. Plexiglass and Lexan scratch easily, discolor in sunlight, and don’t offer the same structural rigidity as tempered glass. For safety and long-term performance, we only use tempered glass in our railing systems.

What railing height does BC building code require?

  • No railing needed for decks under 24″ high.
  • 36″ railing required for decks between 24″ and 71″ high.
  • 42″ railing required for decks higher than 71″.

Always confirm with your local municipality, as building codes can vary.

How do I maintain aluminum and glass railings?

  • Wash aluminum frames and glass panels with mild soap and warm water.
  • Rinse thoroughly to prevent streaks or residue.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or acidic solutions.
  • Inspect annually to ensure railing fasteners and caulking are in good condition.

With simple maintenance, your aluminum railings and glass railings will stay strong, safe, and stylish for years.
